Steve Carlton's first season with the Philadelphia Phillies was his breakthrough and masterpiece season. His amazing stats included 27 wins, 1.97 ERA, 30 complete games and 8 shutouts. He also accumulated 310 strikeouts, easily surpassing the old mark for a Phillies southpaw held by Chris Short (237). On August 13th, Carlton struck out his 238th batter of the year and the offered sphere is an ONL baseball used when he struck out that batter. The ball is signed on the side panel by Carlton (“9”) with many notations including ”Record strikeout ball from '1972'; August 13, Montreal 1-3-1, Phillies 2-5-0; Broke Chris Short's Left-Hander Strikeout Record of 237”. The ball shows great game usage. Accompanying the ball is a letter, signed by Carlton, from a previous auction house that states, This will certify that the baseball ... is the actual ball pitched by me to record the 238th strikeout of the season, breaking the prior record for strikeouts by a Phillies lefthander.”
