Description

Few superlatives adequately express the grandeur of this high-grade 1909 S74 (White) Ty Cobb with an incredibly scarce Red Sun advertising back. Graded 84 NM 7 by SGC, this silk to the best of our knowledge is the only S74 silk extant that combines Cobb as the subject with Red Sun as the advertising reverse. Upon close examination, it is difficult to conceive that this pre-war antiquity is already approaching the century mark in age. Absent are the folds, fraying or surface blemishes that usually accompany similar silks. The imposing illustration of the Georgia Peach is well-defined, properly centered and has an exceptional visual luster. The reverse is equally impressive, as the tightly affixed paper backing boldly confirms Louisiana’s Red Sun Cigarettes as the sponsor. This silk is not only the highest graded S74 Silk (White) to have surfaced in the hobby, but is possibly a unique Hall of Fame subject/advertising back combination. Quite simply, this is ideal for the advanced connoisseur of the finest pre-war material.
