The Fighting Marine, Gene Tunney (d.1978), is beautifully depicted during his fighting days on this original 8x10 photograph from the 1930s. Featuring a stoic portrait of the heavyweight champion of the world, the photograph bears a bold black fountain signature and inscription reading For Johnny O’Beck, With every good wish, Gene Tunney. It should be noted that Johnny O’Beck was a very popular Philadelphia fighter during the turn of the century. The penmanship rates (“9-10”) and the photo remains in impressive upper-middle grade condition despite a reference marking on the reverse. A superb vintage relic accompanied by an auction LOA from James Spence Authentications.
