Presented is a scarce hand-written letter from Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States. This two-page correspondence is dated to 1830 and was penned in period black quill. The 8x10 artifact was scripted by Van Buren (d.1862) while serving as the United States Secretary of State. In the letter, Van Buren declines a social invitation, citing fatigue and other factors. Despite two affixed pieces of tape and additional residue along with typical paper fraying, the condition sensitive ephemera has survived the centuries quite well. This letter comes with a full photo LOA from James Spence Authentications.
